APEX: An Extreme 600 km Triathlon from Mont Blanc to the Mediterranean

APEX is an unprecedented 600-kilometer endurance challenge linking the summit of Europe to the shores of the Mediterranean. Designed as a tribute to human resilience, versatility, and determination, the journey unfolds across three demanding disciplines:
1. Alpine Trail & Mountaineering
The adventure begins at the foot of Mont Blanc, with a long, technical trail and mountaineering segment that demands discipline, courage, and careful pacing. It requires managing fatigue through the night, relying on patience as a true virtue. Those who endure are rewarded at dawn with the first light rising over Lake Annecy, a moment of clarity before the descent toward the water and a brief rest.
2. Open Water Swim Across Lake Annecy
Upon reaching Annecy, the challenge transitions into an open-water swim across one of Europe’s clearest and coldest lakes. Precision, strength, and calm navigation are essential to cross its vast surface and prepare for the final push.
The final stage is a long-distance cycling route from Annecy to Marseille, featuring more than 10,000 meters of elevation gain. This demanding ride includes legendary climbs, culminating in the ascent of Mont Ventoux, the iconic “Giant of Provence.” From alpine valleys to sun-soaked Mediterranean landscapes, this stage represents the ultimate test of endurance before reaching the sea.

APEX is more than a triathlon: it is an exploration of human potential, a tribute to the wild landscapes of France, and a reminder that the greatest achievements begin with the courage to take the first step.

The first stage of APEX begins at the foot of Mont Blanc and combines high-mountain trail running with technical mountaineering. This segment is defined by steep climbs, exposed ridgelines, and constantly changing weather conditions. It is a long, demanding ascent that requires absolute focus and efficient energy management.
Running through the night adds a psychological dimension: patience becomes as important as physical strength. Progress can feel slow, but every step brings you closer to sunrise—a moment of clarity and motivation when the first light breaks over Lake Annecy. The descent toward the lake marks the end of a brutal but transformative journey through the alpine world.

Preparation is a mix of endurance training, technical skills, and mental conditioning:
-
Long trail sessions on steep gradients to simulate the vertical challenges.
-
Mountaineering practice (crampons, ropes, night navigation) to build confidence in high-altitude terrain.
-
Strength work to protect joints and handle long descents.
-
Night training to learn how to move efficiently in darkness.
-
Mental resilience exercises—visualization, controlled breathing, and pacing strategies.
02 How I Prepare
-
Route scouting and elevation mapping
-
Mountain safety management (weather, avalanche risk, emergency planning)
-
Support points for hydration and nutrition
-
Equipment preparation (headlamp, layers, survival kit, poles, mountaineering gear)
-
Coordination with a safety team for the night segment

ALPINE TRAIL & MOUNTAINEERING
After reaching the shores of Annecy, APEX transitions into a long-distance open-water swim across one of Europe’s clearest and coldest lakes. The water can be unpredictable: temperature shifts, wind, and surface chop require constant adjustment. The swim is a moment of silence after the intensity of the mountains—a physical challenge, but also a mental reset.
Navigation is crucial as the lake’s vastness can distort perspective. The goal is to maintain a steady rhythm, conserve energy, and emerge ready for the final stage of the challenge.

Training focuses on cold-water tolerance, endurance, and technique:
-
Open-water sessions in lakes and seas to adapt to natural conditions.
-
Breathing and pacing work to sustain long, uninterrupted effort.
-
Strength and mobility training for shoulders and core stability.
-
Mental focus drills, especially for long distances without visual reference points.
-
Cold exposure preparation (progressive adaptation before the event).
02 How I Prepare
-
Safety boat escort for navigation and security
-
Temperature assessment and contingency planning
-
Wetsuit selection depending on conditions
-
Feed strategy coordinated with the support crew
-
Water exit point preparation for immediate transition to the cycling stage

OPEN-WATER SWIM ACROSS LAKE ANNECY

The final leg covers the journey from Annecy to Marseille by bike—hundreds of kilometers and more than 10,000 meters of elevation gain. The route crosses alpine foothills, rural plateaus, and the heat of southern France before culminating in the mythical ascent of Mont Ventoux, known as the “Giant of Provence.”
This final climb is the symbolic peak of APEX: a test of determination after days of effort. The descent into Provence and the final push to the Mediterranean mark the triumphant end of a unique, self-powered adventure.

Cycling preparation combines volume, strength, and specific climbing focus:
-
Long rides (6–10 hours) to build deep endurance.
-
Climbing sessions to prepare for cumulative elevation gain.
-
Strength training for legs and core to maintain power over long distances.
-
Heat adaptation for the southern sections.
-
Nutrition strategy rehearsal to avoid energy crashes.
02 How I Prepare
-
Detailed route planning including elevation, rest points, and safety sections
-
Mechanical preparation (bike tuning, spare parts, tools)
-
On-road support for hydration, nutrition, and gear changes
-
Weather monitoring, especially for Ventoux (often windy and exposed)
-
Arrival setup at Marseille for recovery and media documentation
